Tips for a great photo collage

Sort your photos before you start

The collage maker places pictures in the order you add them, left to right and row by row. Sort or rename your files first — by date for a timeline, or alternating close-ups and wide shots for variety — then add them in one go. It saves removing and re-adding photos later.

Pick a shape that suits the wall

A portrait collage suits a door or the space between two windows, a landscape one fits above a sofa, desk or bed, and a square shape works well as a party backdrop. The shape sets the outline of the whole collage; every photo is then cropped to fit its cell inside it.

Choose a sensible number of photos

Every photo gets an equal cell, so very large counts make each picture small. For a poster around 60 × 80 cm, 9 to 16 photos read well from across a room; save 25–36 photos for posters a metre or more wide.

Mind the crop

Photos are cropped from the centre to fill their cells. Pictures with the subject near the middle work best; very wide panoramas lose their edges, so crop them yourself first if the sides matter.

Spacing and background

Thin white spacing gives a clean, gallery look and hides small trimming errors; a black background makes colourful photos pop. No spacing creates a seamless mosaic.

Keep a consistent style

Mixed lighting and colours can look busy. Try the halftone effect for a unified graphic look, or pick photos from the same event and time of day.

How big should my collage be?

With 10 mm printer margins, a 3 × 3 grid of A4 sheets makes a collage of about 57 × 83 cm and a 4 × 4 grid about 76 × 111 cm. The tool shows the exact size as you change the settings.

Ordering a printed collage online usually means waiting days for delivery. When you make a photo collage poster at home instead, it is on the wall the same afternoon, a damaged sheet can be reprinted on its own, and you can swap in new photos whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos can I put in a collage poster?

From 2 up to 36 photos. The layout is chosen automatically to keep cells close to a natural photo shape, and a short last row is centred.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The collage is built and printed entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Can I change the order of the photos?

Photos appear in the order you add them. To change the order, remove a photo and add it again, or add your photos in the order you want.

Why are some photos cropped?

Each photo is scaled to fill its cell and trimmed evenly from the centre so the grid stays neat. Keep important details near the middle of each picture.

What paper should I print my collage on?

Any A4, US Letter or A3 paper your printer accepts. Slightly heavier matte paper looks more like a photo print and is easier to glue.

Can I add effects to the collage?

Yes. The halftone black-and-white and colour effects apply to the whole collage, which helps photos from different cameras look like a set.

How do I make a photo collage poster for free?

Add your photos to the maker above, choose a shape, spacing and background, set how many sheets wide the poster should be and download the PDF. There is no fee, watermark or account, and you print the pages on your own printer — no print-shop order needed.

What size do my photos need to be?

Any normal phone or camera photo works. Because each picture fills only one cell of the grid, a collage needs far fewer pixels per photo than printing a single picture at the same size. Very small images, such as thumbnails saved from social media, may still look soft.

Can I make a photo collage poster with only a few pictures?

Yes, two photos are enough. With two to four pictures each one gets a large cell, which suits a couple's portrait, a before-and-after pair or a few travel highlights printed big.

Can I print the collage on a single sheet?

Yes. Set the poster to one sheet wide to get a normal A4, Letter or A3 print — handy for a card, the fridge door or a quick test print before you make the full-size collage.

Can I add a title or captions to the collage?

Not inside the collage itself: the photo collage poster maker arranges photos only. For a heading such as a name or date, make a matching banner with our poster templates, or write it on a separate sheet and hang it above the collage.

How do I hang a large collage without damaging the wall?

Tape the trimmed sheets together from the back, then use removable poster strips at the corners and along the seams. For a firmer finish, glue the sheets onto foam board or thin card first; it keeps the collage poster flat and easy to move later.

Can I download the collage as separate images?

Yes. Choose “JPG pages (.zip)” as the format to get one image per sheet, numbered in print order — useful if you print at a copy shop or photo kiosk.
